The Mid-Day Meal scheme is a government programme that provides a free cooked lunch to children in government and government-aided schools, to improve nutrition and encourage regular attendance. It is now run under the name PM POSHAN (Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman). It is one of the largest school-feeding programmes in the world.

The scheme runs in government and aided schools and depends on reliable daily enrolment and attendance figures for planning and reporting. Keeping an accurate register in one place — rather than per-teacher notebooks — makes that reporting far less painful.
