EVS is short for Environmental Studies. It is an integrated subject taught in the primary grades that combines elements of science, social studies and general awareness, built around the child's immediate surroundings — family, water, plants, animals, work and travel. In most Indian schools EVS runs from roughly Class 3 to Class 5, before science and social studies split into separate subjects.

On a school's timetable and report structure, EVS sits alongside languages and mathematics in the primary section. For the office, that mostly means it is one more subject to assign to a batch and a teacher — the kind of routine setup a student and batch record keeps straight so nobody is timetabled into two places at once.
